The word jamatkhana is a combination of words whose origins are in Arabic and Persian. It can be translated literally as "home of the community."
While primarily a site for communal gathering, personal contemplation and worship, the jamatkhana has also accommodated the various needs of the Ismaili Muslim community from education and celebration to engagement with wider Canadian society. There is no set template to its architecture and over the past five decades since the community’s settlement in Canada, the term has been applied to refitted warehouses, school gyms used temporarily for the purpose, conference rooms in hotels as well as university classrooms. Since 1991, however, a broader program of purpose-built and renovated spaces have become part of the Canadian architectural landscape.
This exhibit aims to showcase the diversity and unity of jamatkhana architecture and design. The over 100 photographs of 49 jamatkhanas shed light on the identity and values of the Ismaili community and its relationship with Canada. In addition to the jamatkhana, the exhibit also features institutions of the Ismaili Imamat in Canada.
